Innovation demonstrates continued importance of platinum in medical applications
60 Seconds in Platinum
Few people are currently aware of the full range of interesting and highly beneficial things that platinum does. To address this, we publish our brief 60 Seconds in Platinum articles up to four times per month.

As Earth Day 2023 approaches on 22 April, we are focusing on platinum’s role in decarbonisation as a key transition metal for the energy transition. Proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology uses platinum catalysts in two important applications – electrolysers to produce hydrogen, and hydrogen fuel cells to produce electricity from hydrogen. A PEM electrolyser produces carbon-free green hydrogen from renewable energy, while fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are a major market for hydrogen fuel cells. When a FCEV is powered with green hydrogen it provides completely emissions-free transportation.
